It is a bourbon crafted with a simple goal: to make a whisky that its creators would enjoy drinking themselves.

A Smoother Kind of Bourbon: The story of Maker’s Mark began when founder Bill Samuels, Sr. set out to create a bourbon he wouldn’t have to “fight with.” He famously burned his family’s 170-year-old recipe and started from scratch. Instead of the traditional spicy rye, he chose soft, red winter wheat for his mash bill. This ‘wheated’ bourbon recipe results in a spirit that is noticeably sweeter and smoother, with none of the usual bourbon “bite.”

Crafted with Care: At Maker’s Mark, we believe that character isn’t made by a machine. From rotating our barrels by hand to ensure a consistent maturation, to our small-batch production, we remain true to our handcrafted principles. We use the same iron-free, limestone-filtered water from our own spring-fed lake, and every bottle that leaves our distillery is a testament to the care that went into making it.
